Indigenous Roots and Early Settlement

In 1882, settlers established a small community called Green Valley, which later became Payson. That same year, the Battle of Big Dry Wash took place just north of town, marking a significant event in the Apache Wars.
The Naming of Payson and Early Development
On March 3, 1884, a post office was built in Green Valley with the help of Illinois Representative Levi Joseph Payson. In honor of his assistance, the town was renamed Payson.
Payson quickly became a hub for logging, mining, and ranching. The town’s first saloon and dance hall were established in 1882, serving as a gathering place for settlers and travelers.
The World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo
One of Payson’s most enduring traditions is its rodeo, first held in 1884. The town claims this event as the world’s oldest continuous rodeo, as it has been held every year since its inception.
The Influence of Zane Grey
In 1918, famed Western author Zane Grey visited the area surrounding Payson. He returned regularly through 1929 and purchased land near Tonto Creek. His experiences in the region inspired several of his novels, further cementing Payson’s reputation as a quintessential Western town.

Today, Payson is a vibrant community known for its outdoor recreation, festivals, and historical sites. The town’s proximity to the Mogollon Rim makes it a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and camping.
