Goodyear, Arizona: From Cotton Fields to a Thriving Suburb
Goodyear, AZ Weather Cams. Goodyear, Arizona, has a fascinating history that traces its roots to agriculture, military development, and suburban expansion. Named after the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the city has evolved from farmland into a thriving community in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The Founding of Goodyear
Goodyear’s history began in 1917, when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company purchased 16,000 acres of land in Arizona. The company needed cotton to reinforce rubber tires for airplanes during World War I, and Arizona’s climate provided ideal growing conditions.
The land was initially used for farming, but as the war ended, Goodyear diversified its operations. The company continued to cultivate cotton while also exploring industrial and residential development.
Incorporation and Early Growth
Goodyear was officially incorporated as a town on November 19, 1946. At the time, it had 151 homes, 250 apartments, a grocery store, a barber shop, a beauty salon, and a gas station.
The town’s economy remained tied to agriculture, but the post-war era brought new opportunities. In 1949, Goodyear purchased an aircraft plant that had been used during World War II. This acquisition helped diversify the local economy and laid the foundation for future industrial growth.
Military Influence and Expansion
During World War II, Goodyear played a crucial role in military aviation. The Phoenix Goodyear Airport was built in the 1940s, serving as a training facility for pilots. After the war, the economy slowed, but Goodyear continued to develop as a suburban community.
In the 1950s, Goodyear experienced flooding, including a major flood in 1951 that caused $70,000 in damages to the business district and town hall. Despite these challenges, the town continued to grow, with new infrastructure and residential developments emerging.
Becoming a City and Modern Growth
Goodyear officially became a city in 1985. Around this time, the remaining 10,000 acres of the original farmland were sold for future development.
The 1990s and 2000s saw rapid expansion, with Goodyear becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in Arizona. The city attracted businesses, retail centers, and residential communities, transforming into a suburban hub.
Sports and Cultural Development
Goodyear is home to the Goodyear Ballpark, where the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds hold their spring training. The city won the All-America City Award in 2008, recognizing its commitment to community development.
