By 1900, he had acquired 18,000 acres of land and began planning a townsite.
On May 17, 1912, Chandler officially opened its townsite office, attracting hundreds of investors and settlers. The town’s early layout included a central park surrounded by businesses, a design that reflected Dr. Chandler’s vision for a well-planned community.
Early Growth and Agriculture
Agriculture was the backbone of Chandler’s economy in its early years. Farmers cultivated cotton, grains, and alfalfa, while livestock ranching also thrived. Chandler became known for its ostrich farms, as ostrich feathers were highly valued in fashion at the time.
The Hotel San Marcos, which opened in 1913, became a luxurious retreat for wealthy visitors, further boosting the town’s reputation. By 1920, Chandler had over 1,000 residents, and its economy continued to grow, particularly with the rise of long-staple cotton, which was in high demand during World War I.
Challenges and Resilience
Like many towns, Chandler faced economic challenges during the Great Depression. While the town survived, the cotton industry suffered a downturn, impacting local farmers. However, Chandler rebounded with the establishment of Williams Air Force Base in 1941, which brought military personnel and economic activity to the area.
Post-War Expansion and Technological Growth
By the 1950s, Chandler began transitioning from an agricultural town to a suburban community. The population grew steadily, and by 1980, Chandler had 30,000 residents.
The arrival of Intel Corporation in the 1980s marked a turning point for Chandler’s economy. The city became a hub for technology and manufacturing, attracting major corporations such as Northrop Grumman, Wells Fargo, PayPal, and Boeing.
Modern Chandler
