Forest Lakes traces its origins back to 1939, when the Denison family established a manganese mining operation in the area. However, as the industry declined in the 1960s, the Denison family transitioned to logging, utilizing the abundant ponderosa pine forests surrounding the region.
The Birth of Forest Lakes Estates
In May 1964, the land was subdivided into the first Forest Lakes Estates subdivision unit, marking the beginning of a new era for the community. The Forest Lakes Owners Association was formed to oversee the development and management of the area. The construction of recreational lakes nearby fueled demand for vacation homes, leading to the creation of ten additional subdivision units by May 1969. This transformation turned Forest Lakes into a sought-after retreat for those looking to escape the heat of the Arizona lowlands.
The Rodeo-Chediski Fire: A Test of Resilience
One of the most defining moments in Forest Lakes’ history occurred in June 2002, when the Rodeo-Chediski Fire threatened the community. Initially sparked by an arsonist near Cibecue, the fire rapidly expanded, covering thousands of acres. Just days later, a stranded hiker set a signal fire, unintentionally igniting the Chediski Fire, which merged with the Rodeo Fire. As the blaze moved northward, Forest Lakes was evacuated on June 22, 2002. The fire reached within half a mile of the community, but thanks to extensive firefighting efforts, no homes were lost.

Forest Lakes is situated on the edge of the Mogollon Rim, a dramatic escarpment that offers stunning views and diverse ecosystems.
